HERE'S WHAT'S HAPPENING—MISSOURI GAY CAUCUS(from Prime Time, March, 1977, p. 16.) The Missouri Gay Caucus is an organization that seeks to help people oppressed by reason of sexual orientation and/or gender through public education and advocacy. It is our statewide clearinghouse for information pertinent to the over 400,000 gay people in Missouri. MLSC, as you are aware, Is a very active member of this blossoming organization. As MGC Is becoming more than a paper organization we need your support and action. To start with, the Executive Council met in Kansas City this past January 22nd and voted to devote a full effort towards passage of the Equal Rights Amendment. Legislation is being handled only in the Senate at first and our efforts are concentrated there. All Senators who are either positive or undecided have been assigned to one of our cities for action and lobbying. It is of great importance that we all do our best on this issue since it is linked to our own rights. Besides, giving support to the ERA gives us a practice run before we have to fight for sodomy repeal later this session. In helping pass the ERA we will gain the support of women for sodomy repeal. Please handle your letters from an INDIVIDUAL position, not a gay activist one. Those who oppose ERA could use anti-gay issue to their advantage. MGC is making an active effort to find someone willing to take over duties of the Secretary/Treasurer of the organization. If you'd like to help, do call The Center or come to the next meeting. The first general meeting for 1977 Is April 2nd in Columbia. It is also the date for a major benefit for MGC. "The Wheel" is planning a 2 1/2 hour entertainment for that evening with $2 cover charge. All the proceeds from the cover charge and all tips go to the MGC treasury. Remember, our most pressing project is to work for passage of the ERA. Listed below are three St. Louis Senators who need encouragement and a sample letter. PLEASE TAKE TIME TO WRITE! James W. Murphy 3742 Upton St., St. louis 63116 Dear Senator, I support the Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution. It is time all men and women share equally in the privileges and responsibilities of citizenship. I hope you will vote in favor of its ratification. |
