TASK FORCE VS. THE GLOBE DEMOCRAT
(from Prime Time, May, 1977, p.21.)
Perhaps you have seen the Globe-Democrat series on the use of children in pornography and the sexual abuse of children generally. If you have, you may have felt, as many gay people have, that the series has been seriously misleading in implying that this problem is especially connected with homosexuals. In fact, the Globe series can be viewed as a deliberate, under-the-counter attack on gay people.
The St. Louis Task Force for Human Rights, accordingly, has launched a campaign to set the record straight by distributing fact sheets to all local media on the studies done so far on child molestation. These studies have shown that the sexual abuse of children is predominantly a heterosexual phenomenon, and has no connection with homosexuality. The Task Force hopes that publicizing these facts will help to combat the homophobia that may be generated by the series in the Globe Democrat. It would also be helpful, of course, if gay people and their friends would write to the Globe, protesting the use of incomplete, inaccurate, and misleading information.
