MLSC Letter Announcing Joplin DemonstrationCitizens
for Human Rights Dear Friends, On June 7, 1977 in Dade County Florida an ordinance protecting the civil rights of gay people was defeated. This defeat was due largely to the efforts of the Save Our Children Coalition, led by the singer, Anita Bryant. Since that day, people throughout the country who are concerned with the basic human rights of all people have been actively organizing to defend the rights of gay people. On September 24th Anita Bryant will be speaking at a revival meeting in Joplin, Missouri. The Citizens for Human Rights asks people throughout the state to come to Joplin to protest in a peaceful manner the Save Our Children Coalition's crusade against gay people. A large group from St. Louis will be departing for Joplin at 6:30AM Saturday, September 24th. For further information see the enclosed instructions or phone 367-0084. The phone is staffed from 6PM until 11 PM Monday through Saturday and from 12 noon to 6 PM on Sunday. We ask the support of all those concerned with social justice. The forces who oppose gay rights also oppose the Equal Rights Amendment, Abortion Rights, Affirmative Action, and the right of minority children to receive an equal education, but support the anti-trade unionist ''Right to Work" laws. The Citizens for Human Rights are in need of any financial assistance that could be made available by your organization to help defray the cost of this demonstration. Please make checks payable to Citizens for Human Rights. Sincerely, We urge you to endorse this demonstration and our future work concerning gay rights. Please complete this form and return to Citizens for Human Rights as soon as possible. Name of organization |
