Skills Used

Skills used in this project includes database design & customization, creating entity relationship diagrams, data flow analysis, and critical thinking.

Project Focus

This project focused on taking Excel spreadsheet data provided by Ms. Deanna Harman and developing a prototype database system. This system would allow her to input data, generate reports, and organize data all while preventing data redundancy

Contribution / Role

Project Manager / Database Designer

As the team manager for this course project, I learned that project management can be very tricky and difficult to navigate if not employing specific management tactics. This was not a simple project and managing the data was cumbersome at times, so it appeared that not every team member was fully engaged and committed to producing the best possible prototype.

Technology / Skills

This project did not require much technology to be used. The project was completed using computers, Excel spreadsheets and Microsoft Access.

Description

Deanna Harman is a graduate Assistant for the College of Arts & Science and was using an Excel spreadsheet to track all information for SIUE’s annual luncheon events. These Excel sheets tracked the scholarship awards, dollar amounts, award sponsors, scholarship recipients, and everyone attending the event. Ms. Harman added to the same Excel spreadsheet each year, so the data stored in the file would continuously grow and become more complex. It was inevitable that this would result in data inconsistencies, redundancy, and extra work to maintain. My team members and I took the Excel spreadsheet provided to us and organized the data by system entities in a new Excel sheet. Then, we uploaded the new Excel sheet into Microsoft Access to create the database entities and establish the relationships with each other. This database streamlined the entire process for Ms. Harman and gave her the potential to save a lot of time and effort, all while preventing many mistakes and inconsistencies.
