I received the Intelligencer internship in the summer 2009. I was an intern for the newspaper’s marketing department. I was hired to assist with the planning of a large promotional project that they were working on. The project’s goal was to gain more readerships through the school district. I was in charge of creating 13 original presentation boards to be used at each of the school registrations throughout Edwardsville. Each board had Intelligencer newspaper clippings of each school to exemplify that the Intelligencer covers the school district well. I was also assigned to build new relationships at local businesses by promoting summer contests the paper was sponsoring. This gave me the opportunity to work on my oral and interpersonal communication skills.
I received the SIUe Alumni Association internship in the spring 2010. I interned in the public relations department. I gained knowledge in main facets of the PR world. I have been fortunate enough to have written three articles for the eDition online newsletter that has a circulation of 25,000. I have written numerous press releases that have been published in the surrounding newspapers. I have also generated excel spreadsheets, edited the eDition newsletter, created surveys, assisted in planning all the details of numerous events, updated the Facebook account and networked with many prominent alumni. I think the biggest project I have had the privilege to work on was the launch of our Alumni Networking Breakfasts that are held throughout the St. Louis area. I have been able to plan two: one in Belleville and one in St. Charles. I was in charge of finding an adequate venue, writing the invitations and making sure all the details were in place to have a successful event.
I will begin my internship at the St. Louis Art Museum in Forest Park in the summer 2010. I will be working in the media relations department. I will be editing and writing for their newsletter, working with the press for pre-showings and other duties. I think it will be a great experience to work in media relations because it will give me a taste of a different side in PR.
