American Memory

American Memory provides digitized collections of photographs, maps, music, paintings, and other visual objects from the collections at the Library of Congress.  This page covers all subject areas and searches by format, time, region, and also searches across collections.  A learning page for teachers and students is also available.

 

 

Child Abuse and Neglect Clearinghouse Online Database and Directories

This database contains over 22,000 records on child abuse and neglect and child welfare issues.  This site also contains a Treatment Directory. 

 

 

CIA Electronic Document Release Center

The CIA Electronic Document Release Center presents declassified CIA documents that are accessed through a searchable (title work, keyword, creation date, release date) database.  [Note:  some parts of a document may be blacked out]

 

 

Crime and Justice Electronic Data Abstracts, U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics

Crime and Justice Electronic Data Abstracts are aggregated data from a wide variety of published sources that are presented in spreadsheets to facilitate use with analytic software.  Files are displayed by jurisdiction and time.

 

 

Federal Justice Statistics Resource Center

The Center’s database of information on suspects and defendants processed in the Federal court system allows downloading of data about specific events and outcomes, such as the number of defendants prosecuted, convicted, and sentenced in a given year, etc. Online versions of the Compendium of Federal Justice Statistics are also offered.

 

 

Geographic Names and Information System

 Developed by the USGS in cooperation with the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN), GNIS contains information about almost 2 million physical and cultural geographic features in the United States.

The United States and Territories GNIS searchable online database allows searches for any United States feature.  A search retrieves basic information about the feature including latitude, longitude, type of feature (populated place, cave, river, etc.), and the USGS 7.5’ X 7.5’ quadrangle map on which the feature may be found.  You may click to view a location map. An Antarctica Geographic Names Database is also included.

 

 

GEOnet Names Server

The GEOnet Names Server (GNS) provides access to the National Imagery and Mapping Agency’s (NIMA) database of foreign geographic feature names.  Approximately 20,000 of the databases 3.5 million features are updated monthly.  Search for world geographical names by specifying name and country (or coordinate bounding rectangle).

 

 

NARA Archival Information Locator (NAIL)

Nail is the National Archive’s database of holdings both in Washington, regional centers and the Presidential Libraries. Text, pictures, maps and recordings are described and links provided to selected digital collections.

 

 

National Anthropological Archives

This site, which is part of the Smithsonian Institute’s extensive site, includes online exhibitions as well as a guide to the Association’s collections (click on guides to the Collections), which describe the letters, manuscripts, photographs, and other materials that are available for research.  The site also provides information about ordering copies. 

 

 

National Archaeological Database

The National Archaeological Database page connects to the National Archaeological Database Online System, a database which consists of more than 100,000 archeological citation references relating to archaeological sites in the area which is now the United States. Information on the North American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act and a GIS Package are also included on the site.

 

 

National Archive of Criminal Justice Data

The National Archive of Criminal Justice Data (NACJD) offers “downloadable access to over 550 computer-readable data collections relating to criminal justice.”  Abstracts of datasets and survey data are provided. 

 

 

National Criminal Justice Reference Service (NCJRS) Abstracts Database

This searchable database contains summaries of more than 140,000 criminal justice publications, including federal, state, and local government reports, as well as books, journal articles, and unpublished research.”  Time period covered includes 1970’s to the present. 

 

 

Smithsonian Institution Research Information System (SIRIS)

Search 5 Smithsonian databases including the Library, catalogs of paintings and sculpture, archival material, sound recordings, films and photographs.
