Help Your Student Get Started

As a family member, parent, or supporter, your encouragement is key to helping your student successfully navigate their transition to SIUE. One of the most important steps is making sure they log into their SIUE Orientation Portal, where they will find a personalized checklist of tasks to complete before the semester begins.

Step 1: Encourage Your Student to Log Into the SIUE Orientation Portal

The SIUE Orientation Portal is where your student will access important tasks, such as course registration, setting up their SIUE email, and completing other essential onboarding steps.

• First-Year Students: Must pay their enrollment deposit before they can officially be accepted to SIUE and log into the Orientation Portal. If your student has questions about the deposit or the process, they should contact Admissions directly.
• Transfer Students: Can log into the SIUE Orientation Portal once they’ve been accepted to SIUE.

Remind your student to activate their eID to access the portal. This is a crucial step to getting started with their tasks.

Step 2: Join the Cougar Family Hub

To stay connected and receive valuable information, encourage you and your student’s supporters to join the Cougar Family Hub. This online space is designed to keep families informed about important events, deadlines, and resources. Your student can opt you in when they're logged into the orientation portal. 

• Stay Informed: Receive updates about campus events, academic deadlines, and more.
• Connect with Other Families: Build a community of supporters and share experiences.
• Get Accurate Answers: Ask questions and get reliable answers to help support your student’s journey.

Step 3: Join Your Student at Orientation

Family members, parents, and supporters are invited to attend Orientation alongside your student. This is a wonderful opportunity to get familiar with SIUE and understand how you can best support your student during their time here.

• Attending Together: You’ll join your student in large group sessions as well as specialized family sessions.
• Family-Focused Sessions: These sessions are designed just for you to:
  • Learn about campus resources that will help your student succeed.
  • Meet academic and support staff who will be integral to your student’s experience.
  • Gain insightful tips on how to navigate college life and best support your student.

It’s a great way to feel connected to your student’s journey and to better understand their college experience. By guiding your student through these first steps, staying engaged in the Cougar Family Hub, and attending New Student Orientation with them, you’ll be helping them start their SIUE journey with confidence and support.
