Student Academic Success Sessions
The Student Academic Success Sessions are supplemental education programs designed to impart the necessary academic skills to attendees through engaging conversation and discussion.
Note: Sessions which can be counted to meet the Health Education Requirement for general education will a notation next to them. Students must watch or attend five (5) different sessions (no duplicates) to meet the requirement.
All sessions are listed below, including a description of each and the dates they offered:
Fall 2024 SASS Sessions
All in person SASS sessions will be held in the
Student Success Center room 0200 from 5 pm-6 pm.
- August 26th-September 13th: Thomas Willoit (virtual)
Session Title: Avoiding Academic Burnout
Description: Do you need advice, guidance, and strategies on how to avoid academic burnout? Do you find yourself overwhelmed because of procrastination and motivation then you want to watch this session! It will help you identify possible sources of academic burnout and strategies to combat them. This is a VIRTUAL session listed on your Blackboard student account.
- September 3rd: Dr. Letrice Young (SSC 0200)
Session Title: Why am I here?
Description: Being in a new space can be exciting and a little bit scary at the same time. The session about "Why Am I Here?" will help you answer that question as to "Why Are You Here?" at SIU-Edwardsville. We will use your current classification as a starting point and allow it to navigate your direction into the future. It is my personal goal to equip you with some tools you will need as you continue on this academic/personal/social journey.

Session Title: It’s giving unprepared!
Description: Are you struggling with time management? Do you get overwhelmed when trying to get organized? Have you missed due dates and deadlines? Hmmm, it’s giving… unprepared! Please join the Success Coach team, who will assist you with overcoming time management concerns and help you take charge of the semester. All students are asked to bring their preferred calendar (paper, phone, or computer) as well as their class syllabi to this session.

Session Title: Becoming a Proactive Student: Taking Charge of Your Success
Description: In this session, we'll explore what it means to be a proactive student and how taking initiative can lead to academic and personal success. We'll discuss strategies for effective time management, setting achievable goals, and seeking out resources before challenges arise. Whether you're new to campus or looking to enhance your skills, this session will provide you with the tools to stay ahead and make the most of your college experience.
- October 16th Elizabeth Delaney (SSC 0200)
Session Title: Here you belong; how to get connected at the E!
Description: Still wanting to find your place on campus and in the community? Have time outside of work and school that you want to use to make friends and grow as an adult? What to find the place to make friends? In this session, we explore how the Kimmel Belonging and Engagement Hub, can help you find your place on campus and provide you with dynamic experiences that will help you grow as an individual, student and professional.

Session Title: You are not alone; the E is here with YOU!
Description: Navigating your college journey can be challenging, but remember: You are not alone; the E is here with YOU! Join us for an empowering session with Lealia as we explore essential resources available to support your basic needs. Whether you’re looking for financial assistance, childcare resources, food security, housing support, or other critical resources, we’re here to guide you every step of the way. Let’s connect, discover, and ensure you have everything you need to thrive. Your success is our priority!
- November 12th: Dr. Ariel Jones (Peck Hall 3117)
Session Title: Practicing Self-Care
Description: The term “self-care” gets tossed around a lot these days, and it means different things to different people. It’s also often code for things like massages, haircuts, or shopping. But true self-care is about more than just giving yourself a treat. Attend this to learn more about defining self-care for yourself and understanding why it’s important to develop and maintain a personal self-care plan and toolkit that is as unique as you are and addresses the stressors of college and daily life.
- November 21st- Dec. 6th: Success Coach Team (virtual)
Session Title: Finals Preparation
Description: This virtual session will share strategies, tips, and tools to help you prepare for your final exams. Check your Blackboard student account to watch this session, prepare for academic success, and finish the semester strong!
All virtual sessions can be found on Blackboard ( https://bb.siue.edu). After you login to Blackboard, navigate to the Student Academic Success Sessions (SASS) organization by clicking mySIUE and then My Organizations.
Some videos may be repeated from previous semesters, please plan accordingly to watch five different videos if you are trying to receive credit. Also, please consult your advisor about needing to complete a health credit or not!
Data on who has watched the videos is pulled weekly. Please allow some time for our data analytics to upload that information.

Social Anxiety in a Post-COVID World – If you’re feeling like your social skills have gotten a little rusty during the COVID-19 pandemic, you’re not alone. As social distancing restrictions loosen and more people become fully vaccinated, social anxiety is increasingly common – and totally normal.
Oct. 18th-29th: A Cougar’s Guide to Sexual Communication & Consent - When it comes to sex, consent should always be clear, knowing, and voluntary. People communicate about sex in different ways. If you are not sure if you have voluntary consent, please watch the following video.
Nov. 1st-12th: Mindfulness - Life is crazy. We work, go to school, may take care of family members, have a family of our own and just in general always have a lot going on. Learning how to be mindful might be worth your time!
Nov. 15th-26th: Sleep Hygiene - Sleep plays an integral role in health. A good night’s sleep empowers the body to recover and lets you wake up refreshed and ready to take on the day. Learn how to make healthy sleepy habits.
Nov. 29th-Dec. 10th: Accessible Campus Community and Equitable Student Support (ACCESS) – Come and learn what all our ACCESS office has to offer and provide to our SIUE students.
