Mentoring Incoming First-Year Summer Success Program Students
The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) CORE Mentorship Program will offer an opportunity for a one-on-one relationship created to enrich the mentees’ college preparation experience during and after the Summer Success Program. Building mentor-to-mentee relationships is a valuable opportunity for a mentor to use their talent, knowledge, and ideas to make a difference in the mentee’s academic, social, and professional growth.
Mentors will be paired with their mentee during the Summer Success Program in July and meet with them for 1 -2 hours a month at least throughout their first Fall semester.
This relationship will foster a compassionate environment that is open to honest communication, and the value of responsibility will be explored and enhanced. CORE Mentors will serve as
- guides
- networking resources, and
- coaches by reinforcing positive accomplishments.
SIUE CORE Mentors are experienced
- faculty
- staff
- alumni
- community leaders or
- dedicated students
Not only demonstrate confident leadership in fulfilling the mission of SIUE, but also recognize the reciprocal benefits of mentoring pre-collegiate students. Mentors will be paired with students based on information obtained in the mentor interest form and mentor selection process. Each mentor-to-mentee(s) pair will be assigned to a member of the program staff who will serve as a facilitator and an additional layer of support for the success of this component of the program.
