Vision For Our Next 50 Years
The SIUE Department of Civil Engineering will continue to strive to…
Excite students about the profession of Civil Engineering (CE) by incorporating exciting lab demonstrations, field trips, and group projects into their educational experience. Providing the infrastructure that society needs gives students a sense of purpose and responsibility that is social, civic, and environmental. Our designs require independent thought and innovative solutions, which keeps our work diverse and interesting. Although infrastructure changes slowly, our profession’s knowledge is growing more quickly. We aim to instill a motivation for lifelong learning by demonstrating how new materials and methods are constantly changing the practice and art of Civil Engineering.
Prepare students for the broad array of career paths within Civil Engineering. Future generations of SIUE Civil Engineering students should have core competencies in the latest analysis and design methods, but their education should also introduce and prepare them for non-design positions. For example, many will pursue construction-related positions, or continue into management positions later in their career. In addition, our role as Civil Engineers differs between public agencies and private companies. Our curriculum will need to continue adapting to the needs of these differing career paths so graduates are well-prepared to pursue their dreams.
Evolve Civil Engineering education at SIUE so that we continue to meet the needs of the current and future CE profession. The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) has established the “Body of Knowledge,” which formalizes the content our profession uses. The evolution of this document drives changes in accreditation requirements and University curriculum. As we adapt each year, we will continue to place a priority on increasing the diversity of our student body. We will do this by changing how we recruit new students and support our current students.
