How to change your name at SIUE
This information comes to us from a student who recently had to change their name over Summer 2017.
“The method for requesting a name change (well, to be correct, it’s actually a utilization of the Preferred Name instead of the Legal First Name field), according to the instructions I received from the Registrar, Laura Strom, starts with havingindividuals send an email to servicecenter@siue.edu. The email message, according to those instructions, needs to include:
“… the student’s Legal name currently being displayed, the Preferred name that they would like to have displayed, and the email needs to be sent using that student’s SIUE email address. Any other questions about this can be directed to the Service Center at 618-650-3770 or you can stop by to see them in room 1207 in Rendleman Hall.”
If [folks] run into any issues, they should contact Heather Yeager, who is familiar with this practice and can provide correction/direction for any Service Center employee who incorrectly states the Preferred Name change cannot be done.”
Childcare for Students
This message was sent by the Director of SIUE’s on-campus Early Childhood Center in October of 2018. It is a professional, nurturing environment providing quality daycare. Students have always had priority over faculty, and pay lower fees than faculty. However, due to altered Illinois funding requirements for how student-parents can qualify for childcare funds, there has been a drop in student access to childcare causing some students to leave SIUE or to find less reliable but more affordable daycare than the on-campus ECC. We have some good news in response to a faculty and staff listserv discussion of why we don’t see young children on campus so much!
Good morning from the Early Childhood Center,
As I read through folks’ comments this morning about children on campus I thought it was a great time to share what the ECC has been doing to address this problem. First I will share that Dr Reiheld is right, we lost a number of student parents when Rauner reduced eligibility significantly to the Illinois Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP). The University was also being squeezed due to no state budget for over 24 months and the elimination of state support for the ECC, which forced us to increase our fees. No surprise we found ourselves serving fewer student families. It really bothered us that so many student families could no longer access high quality child care. Since then we have been reaching out to alumni and community members to contribute to our student support fund.
We have also been working hard to access grant funds to off set the cost. I spent my Christmas break writing an RFP for a Preschool for All grant through the Illinois State Board of Education. A little over a month ago we were awarded funds to provide 2.5 hrs of free preschool to families who qualify (low income, risk factors). We knew student families needed more than 2.5 hrs of early childhood services. The month of July we spend writing for CCAMPIS (Child Care Access Means Parents in School) funds through the US Department of Education. We learned last Friday that we have been awarded funds! These 2 grants will cover much of the cost for student parents who are low income. We are super excited and proud that our efforts are paying off. We hope that these resources also bring more student parents to SIUE.
