--HOUSTON--Rangers pitcher Cole Hamels is expected to be sidelined for eight weeks with a strained right oblique muscle. That was the diagnosis after Hamels underwent an MRI and was examined by Dr. Keith Meister in Arlington on Wednesday. Hamels was scratched from Tuesday's start against the Astros when he felt a sharp pain in his right side while warming up. He was replaced by Alex Claudio.

--CALIFORNIA--Hunter Greene could make history on June 12. No high school right-hander has ever gone No. 1 overall in 52 years of baseball Drafts, and MLBPipeline.com's top-rated 2017 Draft prospect will be very enticing when the Twins exercise the first selection. A two-way star at Notre Dame High (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) -- which also produced Giancarlo Stanton and the top choice in 1968, Tim Foli -- Greene would be a mid-first-round pick as a power-hitting infielder. He's even more impressive on the mound, where he has worked in the mid-90s all spring and hit 102 mph without having to exert himself. Greene's secondary pitches are more of a work in progress, but scouts love his athleticism and makeup and the fact that he's still just 17.

--TEXAS--Two of the American League's more reliable starters have landed on the disabled list, and at least one of them could miss a significant chunk of the season. Rangers left-hander Cole Hamels (strained oblique) and Indians right-hander Corey Kluber (lower back tightness) were placed on the 10-day DL Wednesday by their teams. Hamels' situation sounds more serious. He was scratched from his scheduled start against the Astros on Tuesday after feeling what he described as a "sharp pain on the side" on his second warmup pitch in the bullpen. An MRI Wednesday confirmed the oblique strain and the initial projection is he will miss about eight weeks.
