INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO SEND EMAIL MESSAGES
These instructions are only for use of the computers in the construction computer lab located in the University Park Building Room 1120. If you are using a computer other than these the instructions for sending email will vary depending upon the computer you use. If you only use the construction departments computers you will have to set up your email address every time you want to email due to the many students who use these computers daily. Please do not change any other settings in these computers. If you have any trouble with these instructions, please see me in Room 2101 upstairs University Park. If you do not have an email address, you can obtain one from OIT in the Communications Building. Form more information call OIT at 692-3739.
- Double click on the Nestscape Communicator icon on the computer to start your connection to the internet.
- Across the top of the screen you will see 6 (six) headings which read File, Edit, View, Go, Communicator, Help.
- Click once on the Communicator column and click once on Messenger Mailbox.
- You should now be seeing a box in the middle of your screen which will enable you to view and send email messages.
- Before you can send email you must set your computer up to your email address. If you do not have an email address you will be setting the computer up to use a default user.
- In the box open on your screen you will see 7 (seven) headings which read File, Edit, View, Go, Message, Communicator, Help.
- Click once on Edit and click once on Preferences.
- A new screen will now be open labeled Preferences. To the left you will see a column labeled Category with 6 (six) topics underneath it.
- Click once on the "+" (plus sign) next to the heading labeled Mail and Groups.
- Under Mail and Groups there will be 5 (five) items labeled Identity, Messages, Mail Server, Groups Server, Directory.
- We will only be changing 2 (two) of the 5 (five) items listed above. First click once on Identity. To the right you will see a place to enter Your Name and Email Address. If you do not have a email address skip to Step # 14.
- In the Your Name field type in your first and last name. In the Email Address field type in your email address. (Example) sbodapa@siue.edu You must use small caps for your email address. Ignore the rest of the fields listed below.
- Now click once on Mail Server in the left column. Type in your user name which is only the first part of your email address. (Example) sbodapa. The other 2 (two) fields labeled Outgoing and Incoming type the word mail in both lines. Now skip to Step # 16.
- If you do not have an email address you will be setting the computer up as a defaultuser. In the Your Name field type in Construction Student. In the Email Address field type in defaultuser@siue.edu with small caps and no spaces. Ignore the remaining fields.
- Now click once on Mail Server in the left column. Type in your user name which will be defaultuser (with no spaces). The other 2 (two) fields labeled Outgoing and Incoming type the word mail in both lines.
- Now click OK at the bottom of the screen. You are now ready to send email messages.
- Click on the icon which reads New Msg. A new screen will appear called Composition. This is where you will type and send your email messages.
- The cursor is blinking in the To: field waiting for you to type. On this line you will type the email address of the person to who you are sending this message. In this case it will be Dr. Bodapati. His email address is sbodapa@siue.edu (all small caps).
- Click on the subject field and type in one or two words describing what your message is about. (Example) Assignment #1.
- Click down in the large white area below and start typing your email message. When you are done typing your message click on the icon which reads Send. Your message has now been sent and you are done.
- To exit the email screen simply click on the X at the upper right hand corner of the box and this will close that program.
