Where Do I find my files?

Transcripts :

You may ask what are trancripts? Transcripts are a proof of course completion from high school or college. There are two types of transcripts official and unofficial. Unoffical are normally free of charge, but they do not have a seal or signature. Official transcripts used to be mailed to colleges and universities in a sealed envelope, very few schools do it this way now. This means they have not been tampered with and are your official records. Now most schools use a software system to send them. Some schools accepted them via emails from guidence counselors. Some schools accept them through other offical means.

Parchment is a site that you can order your transcripts from.

National Student Clearinghouse ia another option to order transcripts from.

Common App does have an option to add transcripts as well, but not all instituations accept them from this application. (verify with the school you applying to)

You should always check with your counselor before ordering. These sites do have a fee to use them. If you can avoid additional costs, you should do so.

Example essays :

Now not all schools require essays. You will need to look at the college or University's application to find out. Some general applications do not require it, but if you want to be admitted directly into a program, for example Engineering, Nursing, or Pharmacy, they may require it to be part of their school within the University.

Here are some examples of essays.

There are many prompts that are common, but I reccomend if you really want to get into a school with a required essay write an individualized essay. Schools are reading these now, and they do want to see a passion for the school and your career goals.

Here are a few of my tips:

Be Humble. (but still be proud of your accomplishments)

Be Unique. (You want to stand out and an essay about a lost game probably won't be enough if you don't have any passion in the essay)

Be Sencere. (We can tell if you are forcing it.)

Follow the Prompt.

Take Your Time. (I know it's tempting to do it last minute; I'm gulity of it too, but try to read it once or twice on another day. You will have a fresh prespective)

Some Additional Examples and why the other belives they worked.

How to ask for references:

Some programs ask for references or reccomendations. You should always ask the people first before listing them even if doesn't include a written reccomendation. If you do not ask they may not know what to say or not be prepared, this could hurt your chances. If there is a written reccomendation needed, ask them in person if possible, but a formally written email can also help. You can send the list of requirements for the letters. Some schools only accept them directly from the author. Always read the instructions, and you need communicate them with your reference as well.

Note: very few institutions need or ask for these for admission, but be prepared for scholarships needing them.

ACT/SAT:

Many schools have gone test optional, which may mean this isn't neccessary for you. I would still reccomend taking them, especially if you have below a 2.7 GPA. You can take these at many different testing centers, ACT Testing Centers or SAT Testing Centers.

Here is where you can locate your scores if you have already taken one or both.
