Project 1: CMIS 270 AmeriCorn Systems Analysis
Project Focus: Analyze a company's current IT system and implement a solution
Role: Systems Analyst, Project Leader
Skills: Visual Basic, HTML, Research, and Analysis
Description: For this project we were given a simulated client of a farm that had one computer used for communication and a largely paper based records system. We suggested the farm buy more computers for the office and tough laptops for employees in the field. We created a report generator to help the farmer visualize the data that we just helped him store electronically. We also created a website for the farm so they can share their history and provide contact information to future customers.
Reflections: I learned during this project that not all team members care as much about their grade as you do. There are times that you need to stand up and become a leader. I also realized that once a group sets a due date and some members have not completed their portion it is up to the team leader to pick up the slack and complete those deliverables.
Challenges: Building from scratch causes you to realize all the simple things you take for granted at work. We had to research different versions of office to see what would work best for the farm.
Project 2: CMIS 342 BYOD Analysis and Recommendation
Project Focus: Analyze the growing trend of "bring your own device" and make a recommendation
Role: Analyst, Project Leader
Skills: Research and Analysis
Description: For this project we were to analyze the trend of bring your own device and make a recommendation of if a company should facilitate BYOD and if so what should they do to make it safe.
Challenges: When analyzing mobile device management software it can be difficult to nail down a price from each provider. Each provider has different packages that you can purchase and their packages are so customizable that it is rare for a company to provide a per-device price to be able to compare providers.
Reflections: This would be an easier project to do for a actual company. If you had an intent to buy a product you could contact sales representatives for the mobile device management companies to get prices and package information.
Project 3: CMIS 450 Class Registration Database
Project Focus: Design a database that would contain student, faculty, and course information for registration.
Role: DBA, Project Leader
Skills: SQL
Description: Designed a database that would house student information as well as faculty and course information. This data would be used for course and section creation. Once the course and section was created a faculty member would be assigned to teach it. Students could register for a section of a course once but they could register for multiple different sections of different courses.
Challenges: The challenge of this course was the class was five weeks long. We had to work on our project as we learned each part to complete the next step of the project.
Reflections: This was my first time working with databases and I really enjoyed it.
Project 4: CMIS 468 Mobile Device Management Analysis and Recommendations
Project Focus: Analyze MDM software and make a recommendation
Role: Systems Analyst
Skills: Research
Description: With this project we were to assume that a company was already implementing a bring your own device policy and now needs a way to manage their users' devices. We analyzed the top providers of MDM and MAM software. We presented the top three companies and recommended one.
