Partner Belleville, Illinois John Gilbert is a partner in the firm’s Belleville office. Mr. Gilbert concentrates his practice in the areas of labor and employment law, business law, higher education law and civil rights defense. His practice involves advising clients as well as litigation, including class action cases, in the areas in which he practices. Mr. Gilbert is very active in the community. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of McKendree College in Lebanon, Illinois, a member of the Board of Directors of the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis, and a member of the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Business Advisory Board. He was also the Director and Chairman of the Board of the Mark Twain Bank in Edwardsville, as well as the president of the Edwardsville Rotary Club from 1994 to 1995 and he was the secretary for the Edwardsville Rotary Club from 2000-2002. Mr. Gilbert was also a member of the Merit Selection Panel for the reappointment of U.S. Magistrate for the U.S. District Court of the Southern District of Illinois between 1996 and 1997. Mr. Gilbert’s legal experience began at the office of the General Counsel of Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville in 1975 where he served as Assistant General Counsel and then Acting General Counsel until moving to private practice in 1976 with the firm of Reed, Armstrong, Gorman, Coffey, Gilbert and Mudge, Professional Corporation. Mr. Gilbert then became a member of the firm of Coffey & Gilbert, Professional Corporation, from 1999 to 2001. During this time, he advised clients and tried cases ranging from First Amendment claims to civil rights and employment law claims to unfair labor practice charges, arbitrations, probate and real estate litigation and other matters relating to his areas of practice. Mr. Gilbert is a frequent lecturer, writer and experienced trainer in sexual harassment issues. His publications include: Women’s Legal Rights, 32 NALS The Docket 15, August/September 1983 and Representation of University Administrators in Faculty Grievance Arbitrations, 70 Ill., B.J. 256, December 1981. Mr. Gilbert's experience in training includes: Employee Sexual Harassment, SIUE, August 1996-November 1997 and Sexual Harassment, Blackburn College, January 1998. Mr. Gilbert is a member of the Illinois State Bar Association, the Madision County Bar Association and the National Association of College & University Attorneys. He served as a member of the Illinois Civil Service Commission from 1978 to 1991 and currently serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Management and Marketing at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, a position which he has held since 1985. Since 1985, Mr. Gilbert holds an appointment as a Special Assistant State’s Attorney for Madison County, Illinois. Mr. Gilbert earned his B.A., with high honors, from the University of Illinois, and his J.D. from the Washington University School of Law. He is admitted to the State of Illinois; United States District Court, Southern District of Illinois; United States Supreme Court; United States Court of Appeals, 7th Circuit; State of Missouri, United States District Court, Central District of Illinois.
