Fighting superbugs with multidisciplinary approaches...

Our research focuses on understanding how antibiotics and other molecules that induce cell death through a common oxidative damage mechanism affect bacterial motility (chemotaxis) and the subsequent biofilm stages, such as maturation and dispersal. We are also interested in developing photoactive self-sterilizing materials to diminish the spreading of infectious diseases caused by drug-resistant microbes.

In our latest publications in ACS Appl. Polym. Mater. we report a strategy for manufacturing an antimicrobial filament by combining a halogenated boron-dipyrromethene photosensitizer with polylactic acid.
