About the Program
The Upward Bound Math and Science program is designed to strengthen the math and science skills of participating students. The goal of the program is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science and to encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees in math and science, and ultimately careers in the math and science profession.
SIUE ESLC Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) is a competitive academic program which is designed to serve students in a cohort group. Each cohort starts with a group of 50 students beginning their 9th grade year and follows the same group of students through their 12th grade graduation. A new cohort of 8th grade students are recruited during the senior year of the active cohort group. Students who apply to UBMS during their 8th grade year will remain in the program for the entire duration of their high school career.
UBMS meets all year and is divided into two components, the academic year and the 6-week residential summer program. UBMS students will meet every 2nd and 4th Saturday of every month during the academic year and will reside on campus for a 6-week summer component. We recruit and serve students from Illinois School Districts 189 (East St. Louis), 187 (Cahokia), 10 (Collinsville) and 12 (Madison), who are in grades 9 – 11 at the time of their initial selection. UBMS has an active enrollment process as students transfer out or no longer meet program requirements.
Program requirements are based on academic standing, attendance, participation, and individual student's behavior and integrity.
