Guidelines for Guest Editors
Guest editors are responsible for advertising the call for papers and may do so by whatever means they deem appropriate.
Guest editors will establish anticipated deadlines for both their own submission/peer review processes and submission of the complete issue to PLL. PLL, in consultation with the guest editors, will then determine when the issue will be published.
Guest editors are to be in communication with PLL throughout the entire process. PLL will not initiate communication/reminders/etc. Please always write to both the editor (Professor Helena Gurfinkel, hgurfin@siue.edu) and the managing editor (Matt Sautman, msautma@siue.edu). The editor will respond to queries pertaining to the issue’s content and peer-review process; the managing editor will respond to schedule and production-related queries.
Guest editors will conduct the peer review process, from finding appropriate readers to accepting essays for publication. Two external reviewers are preferable. PLL does have a reader’s report form available or you may create your own form.
A typical issue ranges from 96 to 112 pages.
A special issue should ideally include two reviews of recent books relevant to its subject matter. Book reviews do not require external evaluation but must be examined by the guest editor; the length of each is approximately 1000 words.
The editor would like to see the reviews as well as articles revised according to the reviewers’ comments once they have been collected.
Guest editors must adhere to PLL’s general policies as posted on our website (no simultaneous submissions, MLA format, etc.)
Should PLL find the quality of the submitted materials unsuitable or deadlines are missed, the issue will not be published.
The guest editor should supply contact information and short bios (45 word max.) for all authors contributing to the issue.
The guest editor should write an introduction to the issue; if the guest editor also wishes to include an essay, it must go through the peer review process.
The guest editor should supply cover art and a credit line for the issue. If any images are not in the public domain, guest editors are responsible for all fees related to permissions or costs for printing. The image should be sent as a jpg at 300 dpi. Our cover is more vertical than horizontal; we typically print in black and white, but you may cover the cost of printing in color if you prefer.
Should guest editors object to any of the above guidelines, the offer to publish will be immediately rescinded.
