SIUE’s The Hub Provides Special Welcome for Students – Times Four
Students were treated to good food, enthusiastic energy, V.I.P guests and more during this week’s Student Welcome Receptions at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
A time of celebration and fanfare, hosted by the Inclusive Excellence, Education and Development (The Hub), greeted the following students: Hispanic/Latinx on Monday, Aug. 30; LGBTQIA+ on Tuesday, Aug. 31; Black on Wednesday, Sept. 1 and AAPI on Thursday, Sept. 2.
“The Student Welcome Receptions are designed to welcome students from historically minoritized populations at the beginning of each semester,” said Lindy Wagner, assistant vice chancellor for Inclusive Excellence, Education and Development. “The welcomes serve as an opportunity for students to learn about the resources of The Hub, meet faculty and staff, as well as connect with returning and new students.
“The Hub aims to ensure that each student is welcomed, supported and encouraged to find a sense of belonging which honors each of their unique stories and experiences. This may be one of their first chances to connect with others of similar identities, and to interact with faculty and staff who they know will support and affirm their identities. All faculty, staff and students were invited to attend.”
During each of the welcome receptions, students were informed about SIUE’s vast resources and how The Hub can assist them in their college careers.
“Above all, we wanted students to know they can connect with other students who may have similar journeys and experiences, so they can build lasting relationships that can help them persist to graduation and beyond,” added Wagner. “We are grateful for all those faculty and staff who attended the welcome receptions and plan to stay connected to the students.”
During the receptions, participants were informed of The Hub’s next upcoming activity: Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month kick-off event, 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14 on the youtube/nJ9asH7Z544.
