SIUE Music Department Presents “Songs for a New World”
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Music Department will present “Songs for a New World” written by Tony-award winning musical theater composer, Jason Robert Brown. The production will be on stage beginning at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1 at Dunham Hall on campus.
The musical examines different people who come to crossroads in their lives and shows how each person makes a positive decision to begin a fresh journey or start a new relationship. The show continues through Saturday, Dec. 3.
“The music is very challenging to perform and audiences will be delighted with outstanding singing,” said Marc Schapman, associate professor in the Department of Music and musical director. “Several of Brown’s more popular songs that will be performed include: ‘Stars and the Moon,’ ‘Just One Step’ and ‘I’d Give It All for You.’
“Along with ‘Songs for a New World,’ one of Brown’s most famous musicals is the two person show, ‘The Last Five Years,’ which was also made into a movie,” Schapman added.
Some of the cast members for SIUE’s production include: Sarah Paitz, vocal performance major, and Zora Vredeveld, Brandon Janssen, Michael Hawkins and Maika Miller (understudy), all musical theatre majors, and Courtney Diamond, musical theatre minor (understudy).
