Study Abroad Fair Showcases Global Learning and Development Opportunities
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville students explored the possibilities of traveling worldwide during the Study Abroad Fair held Wednesday, Oct. 5 in the Morris University Center’s Goshen Lounge.
Hundreds of students explored a breadth of cultural immersion opportunities made available through faculty-led programs, the University’s international partner institutions, affiliate companies and services.
“I want to study abroad during my sophomore and junior years over the summer,” said Jayla Howard, a freshman exercise science major. “I’m looking at Ghana or Costa Rica.”
“We’re working hard to bring the campus even more into a sense of international education and help students become global citizens,” said Kim Browning, SIUE’s study abroad advisor. “They can’t do that unless they have the opportunity to interact with different cultures. Studying abroad develops students into more resourceful, adaptive and communicative individuals.”
“I want to see what life is like outside the U.S., experience new things and see the world,” said Nicholas Daily, a sophomore double-majoring in economics and finances, and management. “Studying abroad will help me grow and develop new interests.”
According to Browning and presenters at the fair, studying abroad enhances students’ employment prospects since they have gained a diverse array of experiences.
“Students who have studied aboard will immediately stand out from a group of applicants,” said Jim Antonio with John Cabot University, an American University in Rome, Italy. “It’s a transformative experience.”
