SIUE Music Department Orchestra Concert Brings “Winter Dreams” into Play
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Music Department will present its Orchestra Concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21 in Dunham Hall on campus.
An orchestra of 52 will perform Sibelius Valse triste, Sibelius – Finlandia and Tchaikovsky - Symphony No. 1 (“Winter Dreams”), according to Michael Mishra, chair of the Department of Music and orchestra conductor.
“The early symphonies of Tchaikovsky (Symphonies 1-3) tend to get dwarfed by the later ones (Symphonies 4-6),” Mishra said. “This concert will give an opportunity to hear the rarely-performed 1st Symphony, which I believe was last played at SIUE in the late ‘70s.
“It is a wonderful work, full of foreshadowing of the mature composer that Tchaikovsky was to become - the romantically highly-charged second movement being perhaps the most obvious example, but also the third movement, with its premonitions of the great Tchaikovsky ballets,” he added. “At the same time, there is the occasional "stuck" passage, where you can hear the young composer still trying to break free.”
General admission ticket prices are $12 for adults and $9 for seniors and non-SIUE students. SIUE students with a valid ID can attend for free. To purchase tickets, call the SIUE Box Office at (618) 650-2774. Dunham Hall is located between Parking Lots B and E. For directions, please visit siue.edu/maps/.
