SIUE’s Alestle Wins National College Journalism Award
The Alestle, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s student newspaper, won a national award during the 95th annual Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) National College Media Convention in Washington, D.C.
The student newspaper placed eighth in the ACP Best Of Show — Newspaper Special Edition category and was selected for its 2016 Back To School Survival Guide.
All schools and their news organizations throughout the country, regardless of their size and publication frequency, competed in the same category. ACP judges looked at the topic of the special issue, quality and quantity of coverage, overall design, photos and quantity of ads.
Editor-in-Chief Caitlin Lally accepted the award on behalf of the entire staff. Also at the awards ceremony were Managing Editor Kendra Martin, Lifestyles Editor Chloe Smith, Opinion Editor Chloe Rice, Copy Editor Ryan Bieri, Advertising Manager Nicholas Agadi and Program Director Tammy Merrett.
“The Alestle has won the competition six times out of the last seven years for the ACP Best of Show,” Merrett said. “We were competing against schools of all sizes with all levels of programs. This is a nice reward for the staff who put in so much hard work this summer on the ‘Back To School Survival Guide,’ which provided a great service to the campus community.”
The publication’s prowess also includes placing several times in national Best of Show competitions at the Fall National College Media Convention in the Four-Year Weekly Tabloid, Large School Website and Special Edition categories. In addition, The Alestle has been a recent American Scholastic Press Association winner and annually wins awards from the annual Illinois College Press Association.
