As World Mourns Muhammad Ali, SIUE Recalls His Visit to Campus
It was the summer of 1971 when Muhammad Ali visited the campus of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, with his unabashed bravado, graceful charm, and rhythmic speech.
The late, great Ali, former heavyweight champion, Olympic boxer and human rights activist, spoke on June 1 in the Morris University Center Meridian Ballroom, according to Stephen Kerber, PhD, archivist and special collections librarian.
Ali, who died at the age of 74 on June 3, is being remembered throughout the world for his successes and passionate beliefs, inside and outside of the boxing ring. A memorial service is being held today in Ali’s hometown of Louisville, Ky.
While at SIUE, Ali gave the speech, “The Purpose of Life.” Ali came to the University after his defeat to professional boxer and Olympic gold medalist Joe Frazier.
Sponsoring Ali’s visit and reception were the Black Students Association and the Current Events Committee of the University Center Board of the Student Activities Office.
