SIUE Teacher Education Unit Receives National Reaccreditation
The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Education, Health and Human Behavior (SEHHB) has achieved accreditation through 2022 under the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) standards.
Twenty teacher, administrator and school personnel preparation programs within the SEHHB and the SIUE College of Arts and Sciences were nationally recognized by their specialized professional associations. NCATE’s performance-based accreditation system for teacher preparation ensures that teacher candidates are prepared to make a difference in P-12 student learning.
“This reaccreditation certainly indicates our commitment to producing the top teachers, administrators, and school personnel in the region,” said Curt Lox, dean of the SEHHB.
The accreditation review noted that SIUE teacher candidates were actively engaged in a diverse array of field experiences. It also commended SEHHB faculty for modeling “best practices in teaching, service and scholarship.”
“This acknowledgement speaks highly of the outstanding faculty in our teacher, administrator, and school personnel preparation programs,” Lox added. “I want to thank them, along with our amazing program directors and Associate Dean Barbara O’Donnell, who was responsible for coordinating this monumental task.”
Providers accredited under NCATE standards, as well as those accredited under the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC) Quality Principles, are now served by the single specialized accreditation system for educator preparation in the United States, the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). More than 900 educator preparation providers participate in the CAEP accreditation system.
The Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (www.CAEPnet.org) advances excellence in educator preparation through evidence-based accreditation that assures quality and supports continuous improvement to strengthen P-12 student learning.
The SIUE School of Education, Health and Human Behavior prepares students in a wide range of fields including community health education, exercise science, instructional technology, psychology, speech-language pathology and audiology, administration and teaching. Faculty members engage in leading-edge research, which enhances teaching and enriches the educational experience. The School supports the community through on-campus clinics, outreach to children and families, and a focused commitment to enhancing individual lives across the region.
