Internship & Co-ops
The internship is designed to be a culminating educational experience for Construction Management students. This internship is available to students with senior standing who have completed CNST 231 (Plans & Specifications), have completed or are concurrently enrolled in the OSHA 30-hour safety certification course offered through Southern Illinois Builders Association, and have a GPA of at least 2.0. Internships last a minimum of 300 hours and may be completed during the summer between junior and senior year, or during the senior year on a part-time basis. Students register for CNST 470 or SURV 470, Construction/Surveying Internship, for which they receive 3 hours of credit upon successful completion of the 300 hours. Students locate their own internship positions, which must be approved through the Internship Coordinator, and are responsible for timely submittal of reports and daily logs, along with a summary paper at the end of the internship. The Department maintains a list of companies who are seeking student interns, and additional assistance is available through the SIUE Career Development Center, which offers résumé reviews and interview skills training.
The internship, which was added to the curriculum in Summer 2005, has proven to be an important part of the SIUE Construction Management and Surveying and Geomatics Programs. Students have worked in cities across the Midwest, in Texas and Nevada, on projects including the construction of the new Busch Stadium, expansion of Metro light rail, reconstruction of Interstate 64, bridge reconstruction, high-rise condominium construction, and a variety of commercial and residential building projects. Over 40 companies have participated in the internship program to date.
