Student/Advisor Responsibilities
The relationship between a Student and their Academic advisor is an extremely important part of the higher education journey. Your advisor can be your biggest advocate and greatest motivator. To ensure academic success, please see the following:
Student Responsibilities
- Know your major/minor/degree requirements
- Schedule timely advisement appointments with your academic advisor
- Use Degree Works to monitor your degree progress
- Be prepared for your advisement appointments by reviewing your major curriculum and keeping abreast of your degree progress
- Become familiar with the Undergraduate Catalog
- Become knowledgeable of and adhere to the university’s Academic Policies and Requirements
- Regularly check CougarNet
- Regularly check your SIUE email account
- Get involved in co-curricular activities
- Participate in career development activities
- Respond to assessments, questionnaires and surveys to provide information about your university experience
- Be an active participant in your academic success.
Advisor Responsibilities
- Articulate the major/minor/degree requirements to students
- Teach students how to use CougarNet
- Teach students to interpret Degree Works
- Use technology and advising resources to inform and enable students to be active participants in their degree progress success
- Keep abreast of trends and best practices in advising to enhance student success
- Be prepared for advisement appointments
- Anticipate potential issues/problems and alert students in a timely manner
- Know the appropriate campus resources to refer students to based on their needs
- Encourage students to get involved in co-curricular activities
- Be an advocate for students by providing a safe and welcoming space.
