SOP Celebrates Graduates at Spring Commencement
SIUE held a series of seven spring commencement ceremonies on May 5-7 to celebrate the momentous achievement of more than 2,400 eligible graduates.
The School of Pharmacy honored its graduates during the 10 a.m. ceremony on May 6. Cayden Miller, who earned a Doctor of Pharmacy, served as the student speaker. Eric Yurcisin, PharmD, SIUE SOP alumnus, Marine Corps veteran and older brother to SOP graduate Brett Yurcisin, served as the keynote speaker.
“You are entering into a profession that is among the most trusted in health care,” Yurcisin remarked. “After today, you will be responsible for its longevity, its care and protection, as well as its level of brilliance or tarnish. Police yourself and those around you, act accordingly and with the highest principles our profession will continue to shine.”

Ohio Valley Conference Recognizes Gable as Outstanding Faculty
The Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) awarded the SOP's Kelly Gable, PharmD, BCPP, the inaugural Outstanding Faculty Commitment to Student Success Award. The award is given to a faculty member at each OVC member institution, recognizing their impact on students, contributions to the department, university and curriculum development, professional development, and community involvement.
“I was so honored to even be considered for this inaugural award,” said Gable. “I gravitated toward academia with a hope to have a lasting impact on how future pharmacists approach the behavioral health care needs of our communities. What I have learned along the way is that self-compassion and self-care are a critical part of the journey. I hope that our students leave SIUE feeling more grounded in their sense of self and their commitment to providing the most equitable care to their patients.”
Gable is a professor and the director of well-being and resilience in the SOP. As director, she serves as a key leader for strategy, policy, and practice related to matters of mental health and wellness, while fostering a healthy climate for faculty, staff and students within the SOP.

Students and Faculty Clean Up Yards for Senior Citizens
As part of their clinical practice, SOP students provide home visits for senior citizens in the area. Since 2017, the students and faculty have taken the home visits one step further than only providing health checks.
“I noticed that they have a hard time keeping up with some of the larger jobs around the yard, and the state of their yards presented real fall risks,” said Chris Lynch, PharmD, professor and director of clinical programs.
Throughout April, the SOP students and faculty went out in the community to pull weeds, cut up large limbs downed in recent storms, plant flowers and help with various other yard jobs for senior citizens in the area.
“It is always nice to see how much of an impact you can make in someone’s life,” said Zach McNealy, a second-year pharmacy student from Waterloo. “Volunteering in the community helps give us an idea about the diverse lives our patients can live, and the best way to help people is to first understand where they are coming from.”

The RGGS recognizes the project’s potential contribution and provides the students with necessary resources to conduct the work.”

Pritzker Administration Announces $105 Million Investment for SIUE
Governor JB Pritzker announced the investment of more than $105 million for the construction of a health sciences building and renovations to existing buildings on the SIUE campus during a press conference on April 6. The funding is made possible by the Governor’s bipartisan Rebuild Illinois capital plan, the largest capital plan in state history.
"Healthcare continues to be the fastest growing industry globally, so it is critical that Illinois students have the training, resources, and facilities required to be the best in their fields," said Pritzker.
Funding will support renovating and connecting two existing buildings on University Park Drive. The scope of work also includes constructing a new 110,000 square foot building to accommodate the School of Pharmacy and School of Nursing. New classrooms, research laboratories, study areas, a nursing simulation laboratory, and administrative offices will be added.
