Students Experience Flight Nursing from Air Evac Lifeteam
|
|
Nursing students welcomed the Air Evac Lifeteam from Maryville to campus in October, getting a firsthand look into the career of flight nursing. The Air Evac Lifeteam helicopter performed a landing for the students in a parking lot on the Edwardsville campus and shared insights on their path to their unique and specialized career.
“It is important in community health to know that there are several nursing opportunities available,” said Myjal Garner, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, instructor in the School of Nursing. “We strive to introduce students to not only classroom experiences, but also real-life experiences in the community to be sure that they realize there are a wide variety of opportunities in nursing.”

Alumni Establish Lasting Legacy to Benefit Nursing Students
|
|
Graduates from the School of Nursing's class of 1966 led a successful fundraising campaign to fully endow the Nursing Heritage Scholarship Endowment, a scholarship for traditional nursing students in perpetuity.
Sharing deep pride in the remarkable growth and success of their alma mater, Sharon Grider, Barb Wagner, Mary Anne Wehrle and Lynn Ward asked fellow alumni and friends from the first five classes from the SON to join them in establishing a scholarship that would secure their legacy and impact on the future of nursing.
“I am proud to be a member of the first class to graduate from the SIUE SON as we had a unique experience and were part of setting the successful program in motion,” said Ward. “I am so impressed with the progress of the SON and its programs.”

School of Nursing Recognizes Outstanding Preceptors
|
|
In recognition of the critical role preceptors play in preparing nurse practitioner students, the School of Nursing has presented five preceptor excellence awards.
“Preceptors are one of the most important mentors to our nurse practitioner students,” said SON's Bernadette Sobczak, DNP, clinical assistant professor and family nurse practitioner program clinical site coordinator. “Nurse practitioners and healthcare professionals are faced with increasing responsibilities and demands in our complex healthcare system. Precepting a student, while it is rewarding, it is extremely time consuming yet critically important to have quality healthcare providers in the community. We just want to recognize these advanced practice nurses and physicians for the excellent job they do mentoring our students.”
Congratulations to the following honorees:
- Family Practice: Kimberly Koontz, APRN, FNP, Springfield Clinic
- Women’s Health: Jessica Schneider, APRN, WHNP, West End OBGYN, St. Louis, Mo.
- Mental Health: Sandra Tate, APN-CS, Tate Psychiatric, Southern Illinois
- Pediatrics: Eliza Smith, APRN, FNP-BC, Sarah Bush Lincoln Pediatric Clinic, Mattoon, Ill.
- Specialty Area: Jeanne Hancock, APRN, FNP-BC, Christian Northwest Healthcare, Florissant, Mo.

Chancellor James T. Minor, PhD, conferred degrees upon 1,413 eligible graduates during fall 2022 commencement exercises, held Friday and Saturday, Dec. 16-17, in the First Community Arena at the Vadalabene Center.
"Graduates, I am confident that you will make an incredible difference in our world and that you will inspire those you will meet," said Minor. "My bold ambition for this university is propelled by you, your determination, and your capacity to improve the world we live in.”
The School of Nursing's student speaker, Catherine Kerber, who earned a bachelor’s in nursing, recognized her fellow graduates’ intelligence, determination, courage and optimism.
“I urge you all to always recognize your own worth,” Kerber said. “Take care of and advocate for yourself the way you do for your patients. Prioritize your happiness and well-being not only so that you can take care of others, but also because you are inherently worthy and deserving.”
