SIUE Celebrates Nursing Graduates
SIUE held a series of seven spring commencement ceremonies on May 5-7 to celebrate the momentous achievement of more than 2,400 eligible graduates.
“The magnitude of this moment is indeed cause for great celebration,” said Chancellor James T. Minor. “We celebrate the beautiful journey that has prepared this cohort of high-achieving individuals to influence communities, industry and the world.”
The School of Nursing recognized its graduates at the 2 p.m. ceremony on May 5. Student speaker Sandra Obiebi, who earned a Doctor of Nursing Practice, shared her remarks with her fellow graduates.
“When I think about the journey we have all been through to get here today, the word that comes to mind is perseverance,” said Obiebi. “We have all faced our fair share of challenges along the way. But here we are, standing tall and proud, ready to take on the world. We should all be proud of ourselves.”

SON Hosts 16th Annual Scholarship and Awards Luncheon
The School of Nursing hosted its 16th Annual Scholarship and Awards Ceremony on April 10. Nearly 100 guests gathered for the celebration, including scholarship donors and student recipients, along with SON administrators, faculty and staff. This time-honored tradition is held to recognize the shared aspirations and achievements of scholarship sponsors and recipients.
“We were thrilled to award 60 scholarships this year, equaling $62,000,” said Judy Liesveld, PhD, RN, PPCNP-BC, CNE, FAAN, dean of the SON. “The generosity of our donors is inspiring, and the scholarship luncheon offered a heartwarming opportunity for our scholarship recipients to meet the donors. We have many exciting programs and initiatives occurring at the SON, including the opportunity to fundraise for our new building with scheduled completion in the summer of 2025. We are grateful to our donors for their unparalleled support of our students and the SON.”

$3.8M HRSA Grant Awarded to SON
The School of Nursing has secured a $3.8 million grant through the Health Resources and Services Administration as part of the Nurse Education, Practice, Quality, Retention-Clinical Faculty and Preceptor Academies grant.
Over four years, the project will focus on increasing the nursing workforce by producing skilled, qualified clinical nursing faculty and preceptors to address health equity, increase access to care, and the capacity of the nursing workforce, as well as prepare nurses to serve as clinical nursing faculty and preceptors to newly hired or transitioning licensed nurses in a variety of care settings in rural and/or underserved areas.
“SIUE’s School of Nursing has always been a leader in the region in educating and preparing nurses and advanced practice register nurses to be the best at providing care to patients, including patients who are traditionally underserved,” said Bernadette Sobczak, DNP, APN, CPNP-PC, PMHS. “It makes sense that we would lead this initiative to prepare nurses in the workforce who are clinical coaches, preceptors and clinical faculty.”

Pritzker Administration Announces $105 Million Investment for SIUE
Governor JB Pritzker announced the investment of more than $105 million for the construction of a health sciences building and renovations to existing buildings on the SIUE campus during a press conference on April 6. The funding is made possible by the Governor’s bipartisan Rebuild Illinois capital plan, the largest capital plan in state history.
"Healthcare continues to be the fastest growing industry globally, so it is critical that Illinois students have the training, resources, and facilities required to be the best in their fields," said Pritzker.
Funding will support renovating and connecting two existing buildings on University Park Drive. The scope of work also includes constructing a new 110,000 square foot building to accommodate the School of Pharmacy and School of Nursing. New classrooms, research laboratories, study areas, a nursing simulation laboratory, and administrative offices will be added.

SON Collaborates with Local Emergency Responders for Mass Casualty Exercise
Nursing students participated in a mass casualty exercise in coordination with Air Evac Lifeteam 156, Edwardsville Fire and EMS. This exercise is an example of how the School of Nursing provides hands-on learning and practice in a variety of environments and scenarios.
“Educating nurses in community health includes health promotion and disease prevention; however, it also includes ensuring preparedness for unexpected, devastating events such as mass casualties,” said Myjal Garner, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, instructor of family health and community health nursing. “A multidisciplinary approach promotes collaboration between emergency responders and future nurses, allowing for a more comprehensive learning experience to augment didactic learning.”

The School of Nursing has been awarded a $1,050,000 grant through the Health Resources and Services Administration. The project focuses on recruitment of students and faculty with emphasis on diversifying the nursing workforce and retention of pre-nursing and nursing students. In addition, revision of the SON curriculum will ensure to prepare nursing students to practice in underserved areas.
“Our team is enthusiastic about the opportunities this grant allows for our students and our profession,” said Angela Andrews, PhD, RN-BC, CNE, assistant professor and program director (PD). “We are excited about the collaboration that will be enhanced between departments at SIUE as well as with external school and clinical partners.
