School of Engineering students received global recognition at the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) 2022 Design Competition. The group received the Rising Star Award in the applied engineering challenge, ranking fourth internationally. Students Genevieve Bourgeois, Daeja Daniels, Megan Danielson, Macy Deck, Muna Okeke and Evan Yates represented SIUE’s ASHRAE Student Club at the competition. “Placing in an international competition makes me really proud of our team,” said Bourgeois, president of the SIUE ASHRAE team. “This was a difficult project to take on and took a lot of effort and guidance from mentors. Having done well in the competition shows that the extra work we put in was worth it and noticed.” |

Ryan Fries, PhD, professor and chair of civil engineering, has received the Patrick T. McCoy Education Professional of the Year award. The award, presented by the Missouri Valley District Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), recognizes an educator who has made an outstanding contribution to the study of transportation and helps students advance in their education and as professionals. “I am honored to be recognized with this award,” said Fries. “I am dedicated to my students’ education and development as the next generation of transportation professionals. ITE is a great professional organization that has helped me in many ways. I encourage my students to become active in engineering professional organizations to build their networks, have fun, and never stop learning.” Civil engineering alumna Ashley Fillback nominated Fries for the award. “The best educators, who do not get enough credit, are the ones who put their students first by going above and beyond to create the most engaging overall experience for the student,” she said. “As a recent master’s student, Dr. Fries has had a lasting impact on my career. I know the same will be true for his future students.” |

School of Engineering alumnus Scott Miller, PE, is among 10 remarkable graduates who will be inducted into the SIUE Alumni Hall of Fame on Friday, Sept. 23. Miller is at the forefront of an effort to improve housing affordability and sustainability around the world. As vice president of global structural system technology at MiTek, Inc., Miller is leading a global research and development team focused on innovations that drive off-site construction. Pushing more of the construction process to a controlled environment with higher quality assurance and control has proven to reduce building cycle time, waste and dependency on scarce qualified tradespeople working on job sites. Miller and his team are delivering solutions to improve the way buildings perform in earthquakes and wind events as well as how they resist fire. In addition to his work at MiTek, Inc., Miller actively serves on several community and professional boards, including the SIUE School of Engineering Advisory Board. |
