Six female engineering students from SIUE had the opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look into motorsports at PNC's Girls Day at the track. The SIUE students met Scott Dixon, driver of the number 9 PNC Bank Honda, six-time IndyCar champion and winner of the 2008 Indianapolis 500. They also had the opportunity to connect with Dixon’s gearbox mechanic Anna Chatten. “Due to women in engineering being a minority, it's rare for a woman in engineering to hear about a day in the life of another woman engineer directly, especially one who works on race cars,” said Katherine Schneider, sophomore mechanical engineering major from Red Bud. “Thanks to Anna, I was able to learn more about how the paddle shift system on the detachable steering wheel works with a certain order of gears in the gearbox to maximize the acceleration of the car.” |

SIUE along with Heartland Conservancy, local, state and federal partners, are working to create a long-term watershed plan to address flooding issues and improve drainage and water quality at the Prairie Du Pont Creek Watershed in St. Clair County. The area has suffered extreme flooding several times in the past decade, leading to repeated structural damage to homes and businesses, water quality concerns, and overwhelming sanitary sewer function, among other issues. “In order to reduce flooding hazard and improve water quality, it is important to manage water flow within urban areas as well as in the entire watershed,” Rohan Benjankar, PhD, associate professor and graduate program director in the School of Engineering, and SIUE’s lead researcher on the project. |

SIUE alumna Vicki LaRose, president of Civil Design, Inc.(CDI), and Civil Giving, CDI’s charitable branch, has started the first endowed scholarship for the School of Engineering’s new four-year degree in surveying and geomatics. “Without my degree from SIUE, I would not be where I am today running a successful company for the last 26 years,” said LaRose. “As a civil engineer, I know our projects cannot start without a survey. Surveying is a specialized field, and it needed its own requirements different from construction or civil engineering.” Learn more about LaRose's contribution to SOE's surveying and geomatics program here. |

SIUE's Upward Bound Scholars Academy students briefly entered the world of product design, production planning and more during SIUE’s inaugural Industrial Engineering Summer Institute and hosted by the University’s IE department. “This program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive overview of various essential topics in the field of industrial engineering,” said Sinan Onal, PhD, IE department chair and associate professor. “Our summer institute covers production planning, lean manufacturing, 3D design and printing, and coding. By attending the IE summer institute, students gained hands-on experience and in-depth knowledge of the fundamental concepts and practices involved in each of these areas. Our experienced graduate assistants guided students through the various aspects of Industrial Engineering.” |
