Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day Inspires Local Students
Girls can do anything, engineering included. That was the theme of “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” held at SIUE on Saturday, Feb. 25. More than 130 local middle and high school girls attended the 11th annual event at the School of Engineering, which was sponsored by the SIUE Chapter of Society of Women Engineers (SWE).
“Women in engineering are uncommon,” said Kaitlyn Colligan, junior industrial engineering major and president of the SWE. “We want to introduce girls to engineering and have it become the norm. Engineering plays a big role in society, and we want the younger generations to know that and see the impact they can have through engineering.”
SIUE students and faculty led various activities for the girls, featuring the engineering disciplines of mechanical, electrical, computer science, civil and industrial.

Cougar Baja Team Takes 6th in Winter Baja
The School of Engineering’s Cougar Baja team had a great showing at the Winter Baja competition held in January. The team’s newest car, Reeba #81, placed sixth out of 42 teams, an improvement from last year’s competition. Cougar Baja’s second car, Night Rider #57, placed 20th despite a few difficulties during the race.
“I was happy to see that our cars are highly competitive against some of the best teams in the nation,” said Matthew Buchholz, senior mechanical engineering student and president of Cougar Baja. “This continued success shows that our dedication to a quality build can help us to perform very well at a variety of events.”

ASHRAE Student Chapter Receives Rising Star Award
School of Engineering students earned global recognition at the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) 2022 Design Competition on February 4 in Atlanta. The group received the Rising Star Award in the applied engineering challenge, ranking fourth internationally.
Those recognized included ASHRAE members Genevieve Bourgeois, Macy Deck, Jeancy Muleba, Muna Okeke and Abin Paudel, along with Serdar Celik, PhD, professor and graduate program director of the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering. Celik is the founder and faculty advisor of the ASHRAE SIUE Student Chapter.
“Many of the SIUE students on our team have begun working in the HVAC field or have accepted job offers in HVAC, so seeing all that ASHRAE has to offer creates a great doorway to get more involved early on in our careers," said Bourgeois, SIUE alumna and former president of the SIUE ASHRAE team. "It also gave us pride to represent our school amongst the top people in our industry.”

Umbaugh’s Books Explain Novel Developments in Ever-Evolving Digital Age
Advances in the digital age are numerous and unparalleled – from special effects imaging for motion pictures to restoration of satellite images. Thanks to SIUE Distinguished Research Professor Scott E. Umbaugh, PhD, the academic community can help make it all understandable. Umbaugh, who has been teaching computer vision, image processing and computer and electrical engineering design for more than 30 years, has recently published two new textbooks:
- "Digital Image Processing and Analysis (DIPA): Computer Vision and Image Analysis, 4th Edition"
- "Digital Image Processing and Analysis (DIPA): Digital Image Enhancement, Restoration and Compression, 4th Edition"
“My books are designed to be used by the academic community in teaching and research, with PowerPoint Slides, online software and a complete Solutions Manual for all the included problems,” said Umbaugh, professor of electrical and computer engineering and graduate program director for the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
