In response to the increased demand and limited number of individuals entering the professional surveying workforce, the School of Engineering (SOE) is launching a new four-year degree in surveying and geomatics. This is the only four-year degree for surveying that offers a direct pathway to professional licensure in several Midwestern states. “This program is offered to a broad base of students as it has integrated focused coursework from our surveying specialization, geography and civil engineering programs,” said John Cabage, PhD, associate professor and chair of the Department of Construction. “We hope that through this program at SIUE, we can help increase the number of individuals entering the professional surveying field.” The gift of more than $214,000 in equipment from Seiler Instrument enabled SIUE to launch this degree program with leading edge technology. |

The SOE celebrated academic excellence, dedicated service and outstanding leadership at its annual awards ceremony held in April. At the event, 83 scholarships totaling over $122,000 were awarded. The SOE recognized students who achieved the fall 2022 Dean’s List and also honored its outstanding juniors, seniors, graduate students, teachers and alumni. “It is a great pleasure to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our students, faculty, staff and alumni,” said SOE Dean Cem Karacal, PhD, during his opening remarks. “It is an honor to recognize these exceptional individuals for their hard work, dedication and commitment to academic excellence.” |

Serdar Celik, PhD, professor in the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering, published a new book, "Sustainable Energy: Engineering Fundamentals and Applications." "This textbook presents an engineering approach enriched with applications, economic analyses, and projections of global energy needs and new technologies,” said Celik. “The book is an outcome of several years of teaching energy and thermal/fluid science courses and conducting research in these fields.” “The book was designed to follow a different approach for the learners,” Celik added. “This approach was influenced by Fink’s taxonomy of significant learning, which unlike the other taxonomies is not hierarchical, but instead interactive.” |

The SOE hosted the 2023 American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) Illinois-Indiana Section Conference on April 1. Students and faculty from over 20 universities convened in the Engineering Building for six paper sessions, a poster session and two workshops. “The conference drew a fascinating glimpse into the future of engineering education,” noted conference chair Chris Gordon, PhD, associate dean and professor in the SOE. “I am grateful for the efforts of our engineering education community and in particular our conference technical committee to bring focus to the innovative initiatives in our region at the forefront of engineering education.” Conference technical committee members from the SOE guided the development of the conference program and led paper and poster sessions on various topics including diversity, equity and inclusion in STEM education and outreach; best practices in outreach, retention, and the first-year experience; and exploring the intersection of access, pedagogy, and technology in engineering education. |

The SOE hosted the eHacks competition March 3-5 at the T-REX Innovation Center in downtown St. Louis. The annual collegiate hackathon, organized by the Computer Association of SIUE, made its return after a hiatus during the pandemic. "eHacks was founded with the goals of learning, community building and fun,” said Dennis Bouvier, PhD, professor of computer science in the SOE. “The students certainly have fun at eHacks, but more importantly, they gain confidence in their abilities, experience teamwork, and discover they can learn on their own.” Students from SIUE, Saint Louis University, Washington University in St. Louis, Lindenwood University and the University of Missouri-St. Louis formed teams to produce a product of their choosing in the 40-hour competition. The "Best Game" winner, “Goose, Gooose, Goooose,” created by a team of SIUE students, featured the University's mascot, Eddie the Cougar, as he fought to save the school from a goose apocalypse. |
