Award-Winning Documentary Shines Light on Successful Hiring Initiative
Candace Hall, EdD, assistant professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and co-program director for Higher Education and Student Affairs, debuted her 24-minute documentary short, "clusterluck," at SIUE on Thursday, Feb. 2. Hall and the film's director, Cami Thomas, won a prestigious Award of Recognition from the IndieFEST Film Awards for the documentary.
“This documentary short, ‘clusterluck,’ captures the intentionality of recruiting Black faculty to SIUE,” said Hall. “It explores the creation of an intentional community to support Black faculty toward thriving and experiencing joy at the institution. This film is a digital visualization of my research on Black faculty experiences in academe and encourages higher education leaders to reimagine recruitment and hiring practices necessary for diversification of the professoriate. I am hopeful this work shows the world what is possible for Black faculty when recruitment is done with care and intentionality.”

Public Health Program Earns CEPH Accreditation
The SEHHB's undergraduate and graduate public health programs have received the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) accreditation. The CEPH is an independent agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. To become accredited, programs must undergo a rigorous multi-year review.
“We pursued CEPH accreditation for our students, and now they can be assured that their public health training is rooted in the highest standards in public health education,” said Alice Ma, PhD, MPH, CHES ®, assistant professor of public health and graduate program director. “This accreditation affirms our high-quality programs that can be recognized by employers and doctoral programs.”
SIUE’s undergraduate program received the initial CEPH accreditation in 2015. The master’s program, having earned accreditation this year, now makes SIUE one of 151 public health programs nationwide that are CEPH accredited.

Psychology Faculty, Alumni Featured in the NASP Communiqué
Sarah Conoyer, PhD, NCSP, associate professor in the Department of Psychology, along with three former psychology students, have been featured on the front page of the most recent edition of the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) Communiqué. Alumni Julann Scheibal, Katelyn Houba and Mikayla Duncan-Ebner were Conoyer’s assistants through the Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities program, leading to the creation and future publication of the featured article.
“The article discusses how school psychologists and trainees are engaging in social media, the ethical issues concerning social media use and how school psychology supervisors and trainers can support professional growth through the ethical use of social media,” Conoyer explained. “One of the key features of the article is that we provide a sample exercise for how school psychologist supervisors can discuss various types of posts or consultation that can happen within social media platforms with their supervisees and how to relate that back to our ethical code of practice.”
The SIUE team collaborated on the article with colleagues from Eastern Illinois University. Their hard work paid off, as the publication was sent to the entire NASP membership which includes approximately 25,000 individuals.

J.T. Snipes, PhD, assistant professor of educational leadership and co-program director for Higher Education and Student Affairs, has been honored as one of the American College Personnel Association’s Diamond Honorees Class of 2023. Snipes worked in higher education administration for 15 years and his previous research interests focused on religion and spiritually in higher education, African American collegiate students and critical race theory in education. He currently is pivoting his research focus toward affect, abolition and pedagogy.

CHS STEAM Day Features Candy Canes, Gingerbread and Slime
SIUE East St Louis Charter High School (CHS) students had their minds engaged in how to code candy canes and make fake snow, had their fingers shaping slime, and their hands molding bath bombs during the school’s fourth annual STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) Day in December.
“STEAM Day has been a highly successful and requested day,” said Liza Cummings, PhD, CHS STEM instructional coordinator and STEAM Day planner. “The students enjoy the scholarly creativity, and it is a day to learn and experiment with things outside of the box.”
“It’s been a good activity and fun,” said CHS senior Matthew Hicks, who built a catapult out of pencils, masking tape, popsicle sticks and rubber bands. “It’s fun to explore something different outside of our regular classes.”
