Psychology Students Make the Most of In-Person Lab Experiences
After spending more than a year completing coursework mostly online or through a hybrid format due to the COVID-19 pandemic, seniors Alyssa Cerna, Claire Ellis, Alexandra Hardy, Sarah McCoy and Patricia Roberts did not take for granted the opportunity to engage in applied learning in person last semester.
The team of undergraduate research assistants worked with Jason Finley, PhD, assistant professor of psychology, on a variety of research topics from memory to cultural bias.
“It has been so wonderful for us to work together in person in the lab,” Finley said. “Lab meetings are the crucible of scientific research, where new ideas are born from sprawling intellectual conversations and hands-on exploration of both prior literature and new data.”

Kinesiology Students Prepare Athletes for Mental Challenges of Sport
Graduate students in the Department of Applied Health are working with athletes locally and around the world to support their mental and emotional needs and help them reach their performance goals. The collaboration is a key part of the new Counseling Skills in Sport Psychology course offered for students pursuing a master’s in kinesiology with a concentration in exercise and sport psychology.
“Doing this work now, and gaining applied experience before they graduate, gives students a platform and space to perform where the stakes are low and the focus is on learning,” said Matt Jones, PhD, visiting assistant professor. “They are heavily mentored throughout the process, so they are also getting specialized attention that may not be as available after graduation.”

SEHHB to Offer Public Health Post-Baccalaureate Certificates
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, SEHHB has developed two post-baccalaureate certificates to provide students with in-depth training on topics related to public health. Beginning in summer 2023, the Department of Applied Health will offer certificates in public health emergency preparedness infectious disease outbreaks and surveillance and in global public health.
“It is the best of both worlds for those who want to dip their toes into graduate study in public health for a career change, refresh or further study,” said Nicole Klein, PhD, professor of public health and undergraduate public health program director. “Our SIUE faculty are excited to begin offering these two online public health certificates in summer 2023.”

Principal Baruti Kafele, award-winning educator and best-selling author, returned via Zoom to the SIUE East St. Louis Charter High School (CHS) on January 13 to provide the school's educators with inspiration to stay the course while also looking for ways to progress in reaching, motivating and educating students.
Kafele, who calls himself “America’s Principal” and an advocate for the potential of Black and Latinx students, has worked with CHS for more than eight years. In Kafele’s presentation, “Just One Educator Can Completely Alter the Trajectory of a Child,” he laid out a blueprint for the new year.
