Elementary education students in the SEHHB are preparing for their future classrooms by gaining valuable experience practicing instruction and communication skills with students at Eastwood Elementary in East Alton. “The CIED 441 course was developed to train teacher candidates on the foundational methods of teaching and learning elementary level mathematics,” said Barbara Martin, EdD, assistant professor of teaching and learning. “It is designed around professional principles and standards, including the six basic precepts of equity, curriculum, teaching, learning, assessment and technology. These precepts are fundamental to a high-quality mathematics education.” The SIUE teacher candidates work with elementary students before the start of the school day. They engage the young scholars by creating games that are designed to practice math concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, measurement and fractions. |

The Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) has named Drew Dueck (left), of Hartford, Wis., and Matthew Scott, of St. Louis, as 2022-2023 AASP student delegates. The graduate students are studying exercise and sport psychology and will join peers worldwide to work on assigned student initiatives and programming for the AASP’s annual conference. “To have two of the AASP’s 13 student delegate positions go to SIUE students is a testament to the work they are doing to be advocates in the field and the caliber of students we have in our program,” said Lindsay Ross-Stewart, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Applied Health. “The larger presence our program has achieved in the sport psychology community in recent years is an example of the work we have done to design a program that prepares students to not only meet the expectations of the field, but also be advocates and change makers in sport psychology.” Dueck and Scott stand out for their engagement in the classroom and impressive research endeavors. Both have an interest in diversity, equity and inclusion in sport. |

Linda C. Morice, professor emerita of educational leadership, has published her fourth book, "Nuked: Echoes of the Hiroshima Bomb in St. Louis." The book recounts the long-term impact from St. Louis' role in refining uranium for the first atomic bomb as part of the top-secret Manhattan Project during World War II. The radioactive waste from this endeavor and future nuclear weapons produced and stockpiled for the Cold War was improperly disposed of and has contaminated St. Louis' northern suburbs. The resulting public health crisis continues today. |
