An aerial
view from east to west. From lower right to upper left, this photo documents
the first stages of work on the classroom and faculty office building,
the library, and the science building. On June 28, 1963, with construction
activities barely underway, the board of trustees decided to name the library
in honor of Elijah P. Lovejoy, abolitionist newspaperman of Alton, Illinois,
who was murdered for his anti-slavery opinions and writings. The contract
for the science building, the third permanent structure, was not let until
August 13, 1963.
