In order to
acquire existing facilities near the new campus to house basic university
activities and to provide storage room, the board of trustees approved
the purchase of the unused Wagner Electric Corporation plant in Edwardsville
on October 3, 1963. The Wagner plant, consisting of nine buildings on a
seven-acre plot, originated as the N.O. Nelson plumbing company factory
complex. The Wagner buildings were used to accommodate purchasing, shipping,
library book storage, textbook rental service, and general storage. Subsequently,
faculty and students in the arts made considerable use of the Wagner complex.
