The initial
master plan called for six structures as illustrated in these models. Clockwise
from bottom left: a university center, a communications building, a science
building, a library, a classroom and faculty office building, and an administration
building. Except for the university center, the buildings would be financed
with funds from the successful statewide universities bond issue of November
1960. Major spaces in the buildings would have movable partitions which
could be changed over the years; fixed elements such as stairs and mechanical
equipment would be placed on the periphery of the buildings. Only after
Madison County enacted zoning regulations to protect the perimeter of the
campus, did President Morris on February 20, 1963 authorize issuance of
invitations for bids on the library and on the classroom and faculty office
building. Contracts were approved on April 26, 1963.
