During an executive
session held on May 7, 1960, the Board of Trustees selected the architectural
planning firm of Hellmuth, Obata, and Kassabaum of St. Louis to prepare
a master plan for the Edwardsville campus. Preliminary work had been underway
for several months when a news conference was called on April 17, 1961
to announce that a public planning seminar entitled EPEC or Environmental
Planning/Edwardsville Campus had been scheduled for June second in East
St. Louis. This event reflected the appointment of Arnold H. Maremont,
a Chicago industrialist and art collector, to the Board of Trustees. Maremont
helped to finance EPEC. Pictured from left to right in this press conference
photo are: Gyo Obata, chief architectural planner for the campus from HOK;
Arnold Maremont, and President Morris.
