On October
1, 1960, during an open house being conducted by the university on the
parcels of land it had successfully acquired up to that date, this helicopter
made numerous flights over the adjacent properties. Perhaps irritated by
these repeated overflights of guests intended to generate enthusiasm for
the bond issue election, one hostile landowner allegedly fired at the copter
and its occupants with a shotgun and was arrested by local police for his
actions.
