Visual Communication
The graphic design program at SIUE offers students experience in computer technology that will prepare them to enter an increasingly competitive job market. Students will have the opportunity to learn and become proficient in applications including Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign through the creation of logos, posters, brochures, books and ad campaigns. In addition, the graphic design program includes courses that introduce students to web design. Courses in Adobe After Effects and Video allow students to explore creativity through the use of motion, as well as develop a visual language fitted for web publication.
The Department of Art and Design offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) with concentrations in graphic design, photography, printmaking, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, metals or textiles. The BFA is considered the professional degree for graphic design as recognized by the American Institute Graphic Arts (AIGA). The BFA usually takes students longer than four years to complete due to the rigor and number of higher level studio classes required. Not all students interested in receiving a BFA are accepted into the program. Our requirements are a combination of grade point, coursework and creativity. Our graphic design program is not a computer software-training program.
We have a student AIGA group that participates in graphic design events in St. Louis. Our students participate in student conferences with a portfolio component and attend other lecture events sponsored by AIGA St. Louis.
