Physical Education
A good idea for the Physical Education curriculum would be to have the students
design a fitness course around the school. The students could learn about optimal
heart rate for a good cardiovascular workout. They will also be able to incorporate
what they learned about different strength training workouts and incorporate stations
around the course. The students will have to incorporate skills from other areas
such as economics to make sure the equipment needed will fit the budget that the
school will be able to afford for this fitness course. Then students will have
to start putting the track together by doing practice runs of the imaginary course
and see if the course will be hard enough for a person to hit an optimal cardiovascular
workout from going through the course. After they have a sufficient course designed
they will have to build the course. The students will have to be able to measure
out the wood and be able to cut it out so it fits together and is strong enough
to last for a long time. The students will also have to make sure that the stations
they build around the track have no safety issues such as the ground below the
chin up bar should be soft in case someone falls off the bar. Once the track is
built the students can set up a competition day for the entire school to compete
in on the course. The students can be creative with this and make a few different
ways to win. For example it may be the person who finishes first or it could be
whoever does the most repetitions at each of the stations around the track. The
rules and competition will be completely up to the students to put together which
will work on their management skills. As you can see, by doing this the students
are learning a vast amount of different education areas while building a useful
addition to the school and community.
