Class Newspaper Activity
Objective: For students to understand each of the processes behind creating a newspaper and distributing it through doing research and any other method they see fit.
Activity: Students need to determine what they want in the paper, who is
going to write what articles, who is in charge of getting the paper printed (and
how are they going to get it printed), distributing the paper, and determining
the cost, (if any) and how to get the required funds. The students will need to
research what types of things are typically in newspapers. They will also need
to write the articles, which should be something that they are interested in so
that they put forth their best work and want to do the work. Students also need
to figure out how to get the paper printed. This may involve finding a way to
do it themselves. If they choose to have a print shop do it then they need to
determine from which place they can get the best deal, they also need to find
a way to raise money to pay for the printing. After the papers are made they need
to distribute them; this may require selling them or simply giving them out. Students
may also want to find ways to promote the finished product that they've worked
so hard on. Students should be encouraged to have their paper reflect school and
society. For the activity, students may decide to divide into groups to accomplish
the different tasks; however, the groups should all be concerned with the final
goal of establishing a school newspaper.
Teachers Role: Guide the students into coming up with their own ideas for the paper and assist them in finding resources when necessary. Let the students do the work!
