A Garden Activity
Once the types of plants are decided on, the students would then need to find a place to plant
the garden and plow the area. They will then need to decide the arrangement of the plants in
the garden. Factors that will need to be considered when planning the arrangement of the garden
would be the height of the plants, the way the plants grow (underground, vines, etc.), and how
much of each plant the students want to grow. In order for the students to accommodate for these
factors in the garden, they will need to work together to discuss what they want the garden to
contain. The students need time to work together because "the primary business of school is
to train children in co-operative and mutually helpful living (117)." In planning the arrangement
of the garden, students could diagram the plan for the garden. This would incorporate geometry because
the students will need to find the area of the garden and fit the plants into that area.
