Course Objectives:
1. Students will develop an understanding of the implications of philosophical
ideas on educational institutions and teaching practices.
2. Students will develop an understanding of the implications of historical,
social, and cultural forces on educational institutions and teaching practices.
3. Students will be able to articulate personal beliefs on the purpose of education,
what should be taught in school, and the teacher/student relationship.
4. Students will develop an understanding of cultures and how culture impacts
the American classroom.
5. Students will develop skills to assist them in terms of understanding their
own value systems and cultural backgrounds.
6. Students will learn to identify and appraise educational assumptions and
arrangements in a way that can lead to changes in conceptions and values.
7. Students will learn to evaluate the moral, social, and political dimensions
of classrooms, teaching, and schools as they relate to life in a democratic
society.
8. Students will understand how social and cultural differences originating
outside the classroom and school affect student learning.
9. Students will be able to specify how issues such as justice, social inequality,
concentrations of power, class differences, race and ethnic relations, or family
and community organization affect teaching and schools.
