An index identifies which periodicals have articles on your topic.  Otherwise, it would be time-consuming to search individual periodicals issues to find resources on your topic.

A print index lists articles for your topic that are published within a specified time frame (usually annually).  An electronic index scans many different periodicals to match your search terms and may be updated more frequently.
