Informatics

Information about anything and everything can be stored on a computer for retrieval.

Government

Many government sites have been developed to inform the public about services available through and listing the activities of the government. Examples:
http://www.firstgov.gov/
http://www.illinois.gov/
http://www.bethalto.com/

Business

Businesses advertise their products. More and more business are depending on the internet to provide not only the details of their products, but to also record their availability to potential buyers. Shipping cost and time is also recorded.

Education

Educational institutions post many types of information that might be needed by prospective students, current students, families, employees, and community members on the web site. Classes are taken over the internet, tests taken, and grading done by computer.

Publications

You can learn about any subject. Publications are available online through the publisher or through a library. This includes journals and books. Journal abstracts are often available from the publisher for free online, but if you want the complete text you must subscribe. Libraries subscribe to online journals as a service to their patrons. Many open source publications have now become available to compete with the tradition publishers. More information on this under Theoretical Issue.

Organizations

Organizations can identify themselves and provide information.
Example:
http://www.americanheart.org/

Mass Media

Television and Radio stations can put out information that either compliments or records their broadcasts. Intercasting combines the internet with broadcasting via streaming video technology (Barnes p73). Information is also posted about stories or actors. Video and audio clips are sometimes transferred to the web from a broadcast which creates an historical archive.

Individuals & Families

Individuals can build a website to include recent photos of their families or to post news they want to share.

The possibilities are endless - just remember that the information is only as reliable as it's source.
